Special requirements

Nikos Tsikalakis,
our resident manager
When you book with us you are not booking an off-the-shelf packaged holiday.
At Makrigialos Touristiki we always take a particular pride in our willingness to respond to the special requirements of our clients. In fact this is one of the reasons why so many of our clients return to us year after year. If, for example, you require a baby-sitter, a cook, additional maid services, have special dietary requirements, or would like a four wheel drive vehicle with automatic transmission, then just let us know and we will always do our very best to oblige.
Accessibility
The unique charm of our properties derives in part from the fact that they were once fishermens cottages, which have been carefully restored and tastefully converted into luxury holiday accommodation. However, this does mean that the properties have steps, and are on various levels which might cause problems for some people. If you have any concerns about accessibility then please do contact us as we would be delighted to advise.
Extra days and extra guests
Another example of our flexibility is the way we are able to cater for extra guests who may not be staying for the whole duration of your holiday. For example, we often find that parents will want to book the White House or the Double House house for 14 days but that their children or friends will only be staying for three or four nights. In that case, book a house large enough to accomodate your complete party, but only pay the surcharge for the nights that the extra guests are actually in residence.
Privacy policy
We are required by Greek law to enter into our records the true name and identification of all persons resident in our properties. However, we do also understand that some clients may have a desire for extra privacy. Therefore, if requested, a client's true identity can be kept confidential to Gunnar Strømsholm, the properties owner, and to our resident manager.
The seasons
Crete has a temperate climate. Winters are mild and during the summer average temperatures are usually in the high 20°C to low 30°C range.
Temperatures in early spring and late autumn can be very variable and this should be considered when choosing the clothing to bring during these periods. All our houses have air conditioning and this can also be set to provide heating during the colder months of the year if required. Please contact us if you would like an update on the weather conditions in Makrigialos prior to your journey here.
Beaches
Translated into English 'Makrigialos' (also written as 'Makrygialos' or 'Makri Yialos') means 'Long Beach'. Our village is considered to be one of the loveliest seaside resorts in south-eastern Crete. The gently sloping and sandy beach offers shallow and safe bathing to make it perfect for families with younger children. During the summer season you will find all kinds of beach activities such as water skiing, wind surfing, 'banana rides', para sailing and boat hire. See also our article 'What to see and do in Crete'.
For those who enjoy naturism there is a suitable beach approximately ten minutes away by car.
Transport
In addition to cars and taxis, motorcycles, motor scooters and bicycles can be hired in the village.
There is a good and regular scheduled public bus service connecting Ierapetra - Makrigialos - Sitia. The journey between Ierapetra and Makrigialos takes about 40 minutes, and between Makrigialos and Sitia about 50 minutes. Departure and arrival times vary according to weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. At busy times during the summer extra buses between Ierapetra and Makrigialos are provided in addition to the normal scheduled service. Our resident manager Nikos will be delighted to give you any help you may need with your local travel arrangements.
