Makrigialos
If you're looking for a really relaxing holiday then there's no better place to stay than the village of Makrigialos in south east Crete, and in Makrigialos there's no better accommodation than The White Houses.

Right by the old harbour we have two apartments (for 2 or 3 guests) and three houses (for 6 to 8 guests).
With its sandy beaches, sparkling seas, small, friendly restaurants, tavernas and bars, our village has everything you need. Better still, we're off the beaten track to give you the impression that everything's just for you.
If it's relaxation you crave then spend your time on one of the best beaches in Crete, or perhaps hire bikes or a car to explore our ancient culture, gorges and quaint mountain villages. Then, when it comes to eating, our restaurants are considered to be amongst the finest on the island, serving freshly caught fish, local produce and seasonal ingredients, and everything filled with all the goodness and flavour of our Cretan life.
Towards the end of June every year, and because of its superb location, size and architecture, the villa Casa dei Mezzo is magically transformed into the main venue for the Casa dei Mezzo Music Festival where we have the privilege of enjoying performances by world-class singers and musicians. If you enjoy real music then this is an event not to be missed.

No casinos, no nightclubs, no amusement arcades
We're sorry, but if you're looking for casinos, nightclubs or amusement arcades then there aren't any in Makrigialos. What you will find though is what your mind and body really craves – peace, relaxation and real Greek hospitality.
As soon as you arrive, you'll slip into our way of life. Don't bother to unpack just yet, just take a leisurely shower and then step outside to explore our harbour, beach and village. If it's lunchtime, pop into the nearest taverna and to begin with, there's only two words of Greek you'll need to understand - Kalós orísate (You're welcome).
On your first evening, take a stroll along Makrigialos beach (about two minutes walk away from The White Houses), look at the stars and moon and enjoy thinking about all the things you won't have to do tomorrow.
Wake up in the morning whenever you want. If you're feeling really energetic you may want a jog along the beach. On the other hand, you might just want to look out of the window and enjoy the comings and goings around the harbour, the view of the sea and the distant mountains. When you're at The White Houses you never need to get dressed for breakfast and, for your first morning, you'll find that everything you need is already waiting for you in your larder.
After breakfast, why not spend the whole morning with that book you've always wanted to read and never had time for, or perhaps hire a bicycle for a little exploration? If you need help with anything such as taxis, bus time-tables, or suggestions for places to visit and how to get there then Nikos Tsikalakis, our resident manager, is usually available from about ten in the morning until about five in the afternoon every day of the week (except Sundays) during the season. Nikos is always present for arrivals and departures, whatever the day or time.
Unless you plan to explore further afield you just don't need to bother with hiring a car. The village shop is about three minutes walk away and everything else is within easy walking distance. If you've come with young children then they'll play happily for hours and hours and hours on our long sandy beach and safe seaside.
Come lunchtime there are eight great tavernas to choose from, all within five minutes walk of The White Houses. Each taverna has its own unique ambience and cuisine so you'll want to try them all.
After lunch it might be siesta time, or you could perhaps enjoy properly listening to some music or an audio book (all of our houses and apartments have CD and DVD players). If you really, really must, then our free WiFi Internet access will allow you to use your iPad or other mobile device to keep in touch with the outside world.
A big decision awaits you as we come towards the end of another day - which taverna will it be this evening?
To round off your evening, take a final stroll along the beach. Listen again to the ripple of the sea and take a fresh look at the stars and moon. Finally, when you're in bed and just about to drift off to sleep, ask yourself “Why can't everyday be like a Makrigialos day?”
We can't wait to welcome you to Makrigialos and to The White Houses, so please do come soon. If you have any queries at all then please telephone +30 28430 29183 or email.
